A deleted project waits in the Trash for 30 days before it is gone for good. How to restore one in time, and why its version history does not come back.
When you delete a project from the projects page, it goes to the Trash instead of being permanently removed. Trashed projects don't appear in your project list and don't count toward your storage quota.
Step 1 lives in the menu at the top-right of the projects page — not in the sidebar, and not inside a project.
The moment a project is deleted, its version history is destroyed — restoring the project brings back the project and all of its files, but the list of save points and auto-saves starts empty again. If a specific old version matters to you, restore that version before deleting the project.
And the Trash itself is not forever: projects in it are permanently deleted after 30 days. After that, recovery is not possible — even by support.
The projects drawer inside the Code Studio, headed Cloud Projects, has its own bin icon on every project. Since 19 September 2026 that button goes to the Trash as well, and its question says so: The project (and all its files) will be moved to trash and kept for 30 days. Restore brings back the full code.
Until that day the drawer deleted for good, which is why an older version of this page warned you to delete from the projects page instead. That warning no longer applies — delete from either place and you have the same 30 days to change your mind.
Deleting from the projects page always asks you to type something first, as a check against accidental clicks: a single project asks for its own name, and any bulk delete asks for a phrase. Bulk-deleting more than 5 at once asks for a longer one.
