AI Instructions (Rules)

Standing rules the AI follows — one per card, either for one project or for every project you own.

What a rule is

A rule is one short standing instruction the AI follows while it works: a coding style, a naming convention, a library to avoid, a fact about the project. "Always answer in English." "This plugin targets Paper 1.21." "Never use ChatColor — use the Adventure API."

They live in Project Settings → AI, under Rules, and they are sent with every AI request the rule applies to. You never retype them.

Two scopes, and the second one is the new part

The Rules list is split in two, and the difference is who the rule follows:

Before this, everything was one big box per project, so a rule you always wanted had to be pasted into every project you ever made.

Writing one

  1. Open your project in the Code Studio
  2. Open “Project Settings” (gear icon) and go to the AI section
  3. Pick the list you want it in — Global rules or Project rules — and type it into the dashed row at the bottom
  4. Press add. It is saved the moment you click — you do not need Save Changes

Step 2 ends here: the AI section of Project Settings, which is where the Rules list lives. The gear that opens this dialog is in the Code Studio toolbar.

Where your old instructions went

The AI tab used to have two big text boxes — AI Instructions and Project Context. They are gone, and nothing you wrote in them was thrown away: the Rules list shows the old text and offers to turn it into cards. Until you press that button the old text is left exactly where it was.

If you are following an older guide that says "type into the AI Instructions box", this is the box it means.

One rule per card — that is the whole trick

Keep each card to a single imperative line. It is worth the discipline for reasons that have nothing to do with tidiness:

Vague cards like "make it good" are ignored, exactly as they always were.

The defaults for new projects

There is also a Default AI Instructions box under Profile → Preferences → AI Assistant. That one is the text a new project starts with — it does not reach back into projects you already have. For something you want everywhere, including the projects you already made, use a global rule instead.

If a rule keeps getting ignored

There is no panel showing you what the model was handed, so narrow it down instead: shorten the card to one imperative line, check it is in the right scope for the project you are actually in, and check nothing in AI Memory contradicts it — see Project Memory.
