Chat mode talks and plans without writing a file; Build mode writes the code. How to switch, and why Execute plan runs exactly the plan you read.
In Chat mode the AI discusses but never writes files. Use it to brainstorm features, compare approaches, or get advice without spending credits on code generation.
In Build mode the AI writes and updates files in your project. The switch is the Chat / Build row at the top of the message box, with the line "Chat plans and answers. Build writes files." beside it. (It used to be called Generate.)
The usual way from a plan to code is the Execute plan button on the plan card. It switches to Build by itself and runs exactly the files in the plan you read, with no extra question — see Plans, Questions and the Task Queue.
Typing "build it" or "yes, do that" in Chat mode does not flip the switch by itself. A small card asks first — "Switch to Generate mode and run it?", still in the old word — with Switch and run it and No, keep talking. Tick Always switch when I say this and it stops asking in this project.
Plan in Chat first, then press Execute plan or flip to Build. A short planning conversation usually saves far more than it costs in misgenerated code.
