Inpaint is the one that really edits your image. Read this before using Edit with Prompt.
Inpaint edits your image — "Edit with Prompt" does not
The edit window has three tabs and they behave very differently:
Inpaint is the precise one: your picture goes to the model along with the mask you painted, and only the masked area is redrawn. Everything outside the mask is left exactly as it was.
Edit with Prompt does now send your picture — since 5 September 2026 it goes along as a reference, so the result keeps the face or the object. But there is no mask, so the model is free to redraw the whole picture around it. Expect a new picture that resembles yours, not your picture with one thing changed.
Layers splits the picture into its parts instead of painting over it, which is the one to reach for when you want something removed — see Splitting an Image into Layers.
So if you want one part of your image changed and the rest untouched, use Inpaint.
Inpainting
Use the Inpaint tab to paint a mask over the area you want changed — only that area is regenerated. This is ideal for fixing details, swapping a background or editing one element without redoing the whole image.
The mask works on a GPT Image model and on Nano Banana (Gemini), which gets it as a second picture with the instruction to change only the painted area. DALL-E cannot take your picture at all: it stops with "This model cannot use a reference picture or a saved character. Pick a GPT Image model or Nano Banana (Gemini) to keep the face." and "Nothing was charged." There is no model picker anywhere in the edit flow: the server chooses the model, so if the result came back completely different there is no setting on your side to change. Re-run the edit rather than hunting for one, and if it keeps happening, tell support.
For best inpainting results, paint a generous mask around the area you want to change. Too tight a mask can produce artifacts at the edges.
