30 Minecraft SMP plugin ideas, written so you can build them

The VyroAI team · Published 12 Sep 2026 · 7 min read

Most lists of SMP plugins tell you what to download. This one gives you ideas to build, each written as a short specification you can paste into a plugin generator or hand to a developer. An SMP lives or dies on small rules that fit your group, and those are exactly the plugins you won't find ready-made. Change the numbers, keep the structure, and build one at a time.

What makes a good SMP plugin

An SMP is a long-running survival world shared by a group who mostly trust each other. Good SMP plugins respect that:

Opening a season

  1. End lock. End portals cannot be activated until the date and time in config.yml. Players who try get a message with the time left. /end open lets an admin open it early and broadcasts it.
  2. Spawn safe zone. A radius of 64 blocks around spawn with no PvP and no block breaking for non-staff. Players see a short message when they enter or leave.
  3. First-join kit. Stone tools and ten bread, given once per player, tracked by UUID in a YAML file so leaving and rejoining does not repeat it.
  4. Nether roof block. Players cannot stand or build above Y 127 in the Nether. Anyone up there is moved back below with a message. Admins bypass with smp.roof.bypass.
  5. Season wrap-up. /season end saves each player's playtime, deaths and diamonds mined to a file and broadcasts the top three in each.

Trust and anti-grief

  1. Trust locks. Chests, barrels, furnaces and doors placed by a player open only for them and for players they add with /trust <player>. /untrust removes someone. Staff bypass with a permission.
  2. Block log. Every block break, block place and container access is logged with player, time and coordinates. Staff toggle /inspect and right-click a block to see its last 10 changes.
  3. Mining alerts. Staff get a message when a player mines more than 16 diamond ore within 10 minutes, with a clickable teleport. Both numbers come from config.
  4. Combat tag. Players who take damage from another player are tagged for 15 seconds. Logging out while tagged kills them and drops their items. A bossbar shows the time left.
  5. New-player grace. Players under two hours of playtime cannot be hurt by other players and cannot hurt them. A message shows when the grace ends.

SMP gimmicks

  1. Lifesteal hearts. Killing a player gives you one extra heart and takes one from them, with a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 20. A player at the minimum who dies again becomes a spectator until someone crafts a revive item and uses /revive <player>.
  2. Three lives. Every player has three lives. Their name shows green, yellow or red for lives left, and on the last death they switch to spectator for the rest of the season. (Name colours usually use scoreboard teams, which Folia does not support yet. Build this for Paper.)
  3. Head drops. A player killed by another player drops their head, with the killer's name and the date in its lore.
  4. Community goal. A donation chest at spawn counts diamonds put in by anyone. /goal shows progress on a bossbar. When the total reaches the number in config, every player gets the reward from config.
  5. Weekly quests. Every Monday, three random quests are picked from a config list, like "mine 500 stone" or "breed 20 cows". /quests opens a GUI with progress, and completing one pays the reward from config.
  6. Bounties. /bounty <player> <diamonds> takes diamonds from your inventory and puts them on a player's head. Whoever kills them gets the diamonds. You cannot bounty yourself.

Economies that don't wreck the world

  1. Diamond bank. /deposit turns diamonds in your inventory into balance and /withdraw turns balance back into diamonds. No command creates money, so the economy stays tied to the world.
  2. Sign shops. A sign on a chest reading [Shop], an item and a price in diamonds becomes a shop. Right-click buys one, and the owner collects from the chest.
  3. Market stalls. Admins mark stall areas at spawn. /stall rent gives a player one for 7 days for a diamond fee, and unpaid stalls free up automatically.
  4. Safe trading. /trade <player> opens a two-sided GUI. Both players place items, both must confirm, and any change resets the confirmations.

Quality of life

  1. Sleep vote. When 30% of online players are in bed, the night is skipped after a 5-second countdown. The percentage is in config.
  2. Graves. On death, a chest holding the player's items appears at the death spot. Only that player can open it for 15 minutes. They get the coordinates as a clickable message.
  3. Tree felling. Sneaking while breaking a log with an axe fells the whole tree, costing one durability per log. Players can turn it off with /timber.
  4. Right-click harvest. Right-clicking fully grown wheat, carrots, potatoes or beetroot harvests the crop and replants it.
  5. Share coordinates. /coords posts your location to chat as a clickable message that shows the world and a distance for everyone who reads it.
  6. Fair AFK kick. Players AFK for 20 minutes are kicked only when the server is full, so a slot frees up for someone who wants to play.

Running the community

  1. Rules gate. New players cannot move, chat or break blocks until they run /rules accept. The rules text comes from config.
  2. Playtime ranks. At 10, 50 and 100 hours of playtime, players move up a LuckPerms group automatically. The hours and group names are in config.
  3. Event warp. Staff set an event location with /event set. Players who opt in with /event join go there, and /event end sends everyone back to where they were.
  4. Chat relay. In-game chat, joins, leaves and deaths are posted to a Discord channel through a webhook URL in config, with player names escaped so nobody can ping @everyone.

Before you build any of them

Big SMP? Think about Folia first

Folia runs regions of the world on separate threads, and its README says SMP-style servers, where players spread out, benefit the most. Plugins only load on Folia if they are written for it, so decide early. Our guide Do Folia plugins work on Paper? explains the trade-offs.

Build them with VyroAI.vip

Paste any idea above into VyroAI.vip and it writes the plugin and hands you a compiled .jar. If your SMP might move to Folia, pick the Paper + Folia platform option. The plugin then runs on your Paper server today and on Folia later, from the same jar. Build the simplest idea first, test it on a local server, then change one thing and build again.

FAQ

What plugins does every SMP need? Most groups want some form of trust locks or claims (6), graves (22) and a sleep vote (21). After that it depends on your group.

Can one plugin do several of these? It can, but while you are learning it is a bad idea. One plugin per idea is easier to test and easier to remove.

Should these be Skript instead? Small rules like 21 or 24 work fine in Skript. Anything with a GUI, saved data or cross-player trades, like 15, 17 or 20, is easier to maintain as a plugin.

Are these ideas original? Some are SMP classics. The value is having yours behave exactly the way your group wants, and that is something you can't download.
