Skript is the plugin that lets you script your server in something close to English. Drop a .sk file in plugins/Skript/scripts/, run /sk reload, and your rule is live — no compiler, no restart, no Java.
It is the fastest way to change how a server behaves. It is also the easiest way to quietly wreck your TPS, and the syntax is deceptively fussy for something that reads like a sentence.
- Event rules. "When a player right-clicks this, do that." One block of code, done. - Server-specific behaviour nobody would publish a plugin for — your spawn rules, your join messages, your event mini-games. - Live iteration. Edit the file, /sk reload, test. No build step at all. - Small custom commands. /kit, /report, /warp variants with your exact wording.
command /heal:
permission: server.heal
trigger:
heal the player
send "&aYou have been healed." to player
on join:
set join message to "&8[&a+&8] &7%player%"
if player has permission "server.staff":
broadcast "&eStaff member %player% has joined."
That is a working script. Nothing to compile, nothing to install beyond Skript itself.
- Performance. Skript is interpreted. A loop over every entity in the world every tick will cost you TPS in a way the same logic in Java would not. Players feel it. - Scale. A 200-line script is pleasant. A 4,000-line one is a maintenance problem with no type checking and error messages that point at the wrong line. - Data. Variables persist, but there is no schema and no migrations. A typo in a variable name creates a new variable rather than an error. - Distribution. You cannot hand a .sk to someone who does not run Skript, and many addons your script depends on (SkBee, skript-reflect) must be installed too. - Version drift. Syntax changes between Skript releases and addons. A snippet from a 2021 forum thread often will not parse today.
Rule of thumb: if the thing you are writing would be worth publishing as a plugin, write it as a plugin. If it only makes sense on your server, Skript is the right size.
Skript's syntax depends on your Skript version and your installed addons. The two things you must state:
1. Your Skript version (/sk or the console shows it on startup). 2. Which addons you have — SkBee, skript-reflect, SkQuery, Vault hooks. Generated code using an addon you do not have will not parse.
Then describe the event, the condition and the effect separately:
Weak: "stop people griefing spawn"
Strong:
On block break: if the player does not have the permission
spawn.buildand the block is within 50 blocks of the world spawn of world "world", cancel the event and send the player "&cYou cannot build at spawn." with a 3-second cooldown on the message so it does not spam.
The second one names the event, the condition, the effect, the message and the anti-spam rule. All four are decisions.
Scripts get hard to hand over when every message is inline. Ask for messages in one options block at the top:
options:
prefix: &8[&aServer&8] &7
no-perm: &cYou do not have permission.
- /sk reload <script> and read the console. Parse errors name the line — that message is the whole debugging process most of the time. - Test as a non-op. Op bypasses most permission checks, so op testing tells you nothing about whether your permission gate works. This is the single most common "it works for me" mistake. - Watch TPS after adding anything that loops. /tps before and after, with players online, not on an empty server. - Back up the world before testing anything that deletes, sets or fills blocks.
| You want | Build |
|---|---|
| A server rule, a join message, a small command | Skript |
| Something you will publish, sell, or run at scale | Plugin |
| Recipes, loot, advancements | Datapack |
| New blocks or items players can see | Mod |
VyroAI generates Skript alongside plugins, mods and datapacks — describe the rule, get a .sk file, drop it in plugins/Skript/scripts/ and reload. Free tier, no card.
Write one rule first, reload, and confirm it fires as a non-op. A script that parses is not the same as a script that does what you meant.
Is Skript a programming language? Functionally yes, with English-like syntax. You will not write Java, but you are still writing logic — events, conditions, loops and variables.
Do players need anything installed? No. Skript runs on the server. Players join normally.
Is Skript bad for performance? Skript itself is fine. Badly written scripts are not — anything looping over many entities or blocks every tick will cost TPS. Keep loops out of tick events.
Can I convert a Skript into a real plugin? Not automatically, in any tool worth trusting. The honest path is to rebuild it as a plugin from the same spec — describe what the script does and generate a plugin from that description.
Why does code from a tutorial not work? Skript syntax changes between versions and many snippets need addons. Check your Skript version and which addons the snippet assumes before assuming the code is wrong.
