Importing a GitHub Repository

Turning a GitHub repository into a VyroAI project: what it brings in, what it skips, and the limits it stops at.

What it does

Import from GitHub takes a repository — owner/repo, or the full github.com/owner/repo address — reads its files and makes a VyroAI project from them. The project is named after the repository and opens with your own code in the file tree. VyroAI picks the project type from what it finds, so a plugin comes in as a plugin and a bot as a bot.

Public repositories need nothing. For a private one, connect GitHub first under Profile → Connectors so VyroAI can read it as you. The button sits in the ⋯ menu beside New on your project list.

If the files cannot be saved, the half-made project is deleted again, so you are never left with an empty project wearing your repository's name. The message you see then is often a general one (Edge Function returned a non-2xx status code) rather than the real reason. The usual reasons are a repository over 2000 files or 25 MB, or a private repository without GitHub connected.

The ZIP route, for a repository that is too big

You can also go the long way round: download the repository as a ZIP from GitHub — the green Code button on any repo page, then Download ZIP — and bring that in with Import from ZIP when you create a project. It takes up to 2000 files and about 50 MB, so it is the route for a repository that is over the limits below. See Starting a New Project.

For a private repository the same thing works: GitHub will hand you the ZIP once you are signed in there.

The limits

FilesUp to 2000
Total sizeUp to 25 MB
Skipped foldersnode_modules, .git, .idea, .gradle, and build output folders like build/, target/ and dist/
Skipped filesBinaries — jars, zips, images, executables, lock files

Why things go missing

The import wants source, not build output, so it deliberately leaves the folders above behind. Import from ZIP skips a slightly different list: node_modules, .git, .idea and Mac junk (__MACOSX, .DS_Store), plus binaries and any text file over 500 KB, which is left out whole and named on the preview. It does not skip build output folders like build/, target/ or dist/, so a ZIP import can bring in more than the GitHub route would.

A repository over 2000 files or 25 MB is refused rather than half-imported. Import the part you actually want to work on instead — a monorepo will not fit.
